Eat, Pray, Love!
Mantises have huge spiked raptorial forelegs which give them the look of “praying”. They use these powerful legs to ambush prey, leaping forward and grabbing their victim securely while they monch down. They have amazing stereovision and their heads can rotate 180 degrees which helps them focus on moving prey. Another cool mantis feature is their amazing mimicry abilities. They’re coloured to perfectly camouflage into their environments. Some mantises, like orchid mantises look so convincingly like flowers that pollinating insects prefer them over real flowers. Uh oh, but not for long! Once the insect gets close enough the beautiful flower turns out to be a hungry mantis assassin. Yikes!
